UK shifts into top gear with most EVs in Europe

The UK has long been home to motoring icons, from the Mini to the Land Rover. Now, we’re making history again — this time by leading Europe’s EV revolution.

The UK – birthplace of the Mini, the Land Rover and some of the world’s most legendary racetracks – has just hit a new automotive milestone. We’re now leading the charge as Europe’s biggest EV market, with one in five new cars sold here now fully electric.

We haven’t just joined the EV revolution, we’re leading it. And while the idea of a nation famous for traffic jams and motorways lined with service station pasties going all-in on electric might have once seemed unlikely, here we are. The question now is: how do we keep the wheels turning?

An EV boom is only as good as the infrastructure behind it. Charging needs to be fast, reliable, and accessible, whether you’re commuting, running a fleet or heading off on a road trip. That’s why we’re building and expanding the backbone of Britain’s EV future – from ultra-rapid charging hubs to smart home solutions and even game-changing innovations for tricky urban spaces.

Driving the change

Ultra-fast charging hubs: no more range anxiety
EV drivers want speed, and we’re delivering. Across the UK, we’re rolling out high-powered charging hubs in key locations:

  • ScotlandSix new charging hubs featuring 42 ultra-rapid chargers, each delivering up to 150 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Perfect for commuters and road-trippers alike
  • WalesOur first ultra-fast public EV charging hub has landed, featuring 10 ultra-fast 300kW bays to keep journeys smooth and stress-free
  • Urban & rural – Whether in city centres or off the beaten track, we’re expanding charging options to support more drivers across the country - introducing 72 ultra-fast charging bays across the UK just last year

We also installed around 8,000 EV chargers in homes across the UK and around 2,000 chargers for small businesses, enabling 50 million miles of charging in 2024 alone.

Supercharging fleets and freight

It’s not just about personal cars — businesses, logistics, and heavy-duty transport are all making the shift to electric, and we’re helping them get there.

  • We’re building a pan-European charging network for eTrucks, in collaboration with MAN Truck & Bus, with new hubs already in development in Stockton-on-Tees, Manchester, Gateshead, and Swindon
  • Our smart fleet charging solutions help businesses electrify their operations with seamless grid connections and intelligent energy management

Smart home charging: even for tricky streets

Not everyone has a driveway, but that shouldn’t stop them from going electric. That’s why we’re trialling EV Hover, an innovative 180-degree swivel arm that allows charging cables to hover over the pavement — perfect for homes without off-street parking.

Batteries and beyond: making green energy go further

EVs aren’t just about reducing emissions, they’re also key to a smarter, more flexible energy system. Our battery storage technology means we can:

  • Store excess renewable energy and use it to charge EVs when demand is high
  • Help balance the grid, making the transition to zero-carbon transport even smoother

The road ahead

The UK is now leading Europe’s EV charge — but this is just the beginning. With government targets pushing for 28% of new car sales to be electric in 2025, we’re stepping up to ensure the right infrastructure is in place to support this shift.

From ultra-fast charging hubs to innovative home solutions, fleet electrification, and smart energy storage, we’re making sure the UK’s electric future isn’t just possible — it’s powerful, seamless, and built to last.
