EV charging heavy logistics

In for the long haul: driving an electric future for heavy transport

From fast-charging freight to cross-border partnerships, E.ON Drive Infrastructure is breaking down barriers to electric transport.

Denmark — home of LEGO, delicious pastries and a love of cycling — is now building something even bigger: Europe’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging hub for lorries and buses.

As the country rolls out an impressive number of charging parks and fast-charging stations, we’re helping to power the transition away from fossil fuels for even the heaviest of hauliers. Because why stop at building blocks when you can build a greener, cleaner future?

Denmark has more than 300,000 electric cars on the road, with electric vans, buses, and trucks not far behind. However, the transition from fossil fuels to electricity is challenging, especially in sectors like heavy transport, where investment and consistent support are key.

In this landscape, E.ON Drive Infrastructure is a critical partner for companies and policymakers alike. We’re not just working on standard EV adoption, but also the far more complex and impactful transition of heavy vehicles.

Progressive partnerships

E.ON Drive Infrastructure have recently announced a landmark partnership with Vejdirektoratet (the Danish Road Directorate) to develop Denmark’s largest charging station dedicated to heavy transport. The new site at Padborg is equipped with seven 400kW fast chargers designed to service up to eight electric trucks at any one time, and tailored to meet the needs of the country’s busy logistics sector. Its strategic location, close to key transport routes and within 60 kilometres of other major chargers, means rapid recharging and the reassurance that no truck is ever too far from its next charge.

But Padborg is only the beginning. By 2030, we aim to have at least 25 similar charging parks throughout Denmark. This extensive network means hauliers no longer have to hesitate about going electric, as accessible, high-speed charging options become widely available.

A new European network with MAN Truck & Bus

Further afield, E.ON Drive is building a cross-European network in collaboration with MAN Truck & Bus to power heavy duty EVs across the continent. This ambitious venture will add around 400 charging stations at 170 locations including Germany and the UK, offering new capabilities for cross-border transport.

With major vehicle manufacturers now offering electric options, demand is surging for robust, easily accessible infrastructure, particularly for long-haul heavy transport.
