Reclaiming Narratives: how we’re celebrating Black History Month

At E.ON, we’re proud to recognise and celebrate Black History Month, an important time to reflect on the significant contributions of Black communities to our collective history and to acknowledge the richness of Black heritage.

This year, the theme ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ encourages us not only to revisit the stories of the past but also to reclaim ownership of how these stories are told and shared in the present. Two of our colleagues, Nicola Dormer and Darryl Osei-Kufour, share their thoughts on what this theme means to them and how it shapes their personal journeys.

For Nicola Dormer, reclaiming narratives is both a personal and community-driven mission. She reflects on the power of owning the stories that have often been told about Black communities but not always by them. Nicola explains:

"For me, the theme 'reclaiming narratives' means taking ownership of the stories that have often been told about Black communities, but also to challenge the negative self-talk I’ve told myself over the years such as: 'You're not good enough' and 'Be seen and not heard.' This is a moment to ensure the richness of Black history is recognised. It’s great to reflect on the past, but it also provides a great opportunity to discuss how we can shape the future."

Darryl Osei-Kufour expands on this idea by highlighting the empowering nature of reclaiming narratives during Black History Month. He emphasises the importance of preserving and celebrating Black history through the lens of those who have lived it. Darryl shares:

"Reclaiming the narrative during Black History Month is important to me because it empowers us to tell our own stories, honour our truths, and ensure that our history is preserved and celebrated through our own lens, not through the distortions of others."

Both Nicola and Darryl remind us of the significance of Black History Month in fostering a more inclusive and authentic narrative –  one that honours the struggles, celebrates the triumphs, and inspires future generations.

At E.ON, we’re committed to creating a space where these narratives are heard, respected, and amplified. The theme ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ pushes us to reflect not just on the past but on the stories we choose to tell and the future we can build together.

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, let us take this opportunity to engage in conversations that challenge old perspectives, celebrate diversity, and inspire positive change.

Together, we can shape a future where all stories are valued, and every voice is heard.
