Opening doors with apprenticeships

As a leading UK employer, we’re proud to lead the way in supporting younger generations to build meaningful careers where they’re working to create a more sustainable future.

At E.ON, we’re a proud green jobs employer, committed to leading the transition to a new energy world. But we know that for the energy transition to be a success, everyone needs to be included on the journey.

Our recent research1 shows there is a clear need to make a change and invest in our future talent as despite 62% of 18 to 24-year-olds wanting a more environmentally friendly job, only 23% have one.

We’re committed to helping avoid a skills gap, build a greener economy and inspire other organisations to join us on this journey, driving true societal impact. As a leading UK employer, we’re proud to lead the way in supporting younger generations to build meaningful careers where they’re working to create a more sustainable future. And apprenticeships are a great example of how younger generations are defining their own development, allowing them to learn quickly and develop their skills in a variety of roles.

Our degree apprenticeship scheme offers young people the opportunity to join the world of work, where they earn a competitive salary, alongside gaining a fully funded degree. We currently have 19 degree apprentices on a range of schemes, including Engineering, Project Management and Digital Technology, and will be welcoming another 15 degree apprentices in September.

We’re focused on ensuring our apprentices develop the future skills needed to thrive, with special attention placed on green skills. In fact, every degree apprentice, regardless of their scheme, completes at least one sustainability-linked placement during their programme with us. Plus, our apprentices are actively involved in the local community through volunteering projects and team events, such as volunteering at a local wildlife trust to help clear pathways to prevent invasive species and introduce wildlife corridors.

George McLaren, one of our degree apprentices, said: “A green career is very important to me. My generation, and the generations to come, are the ones that will most feel the effects of climate change unless we take action. Green jobs are only going to grow and I think I’m entering the sector at an important time.”

We’re committed to supporting more young people get into green jobs, and helping all our colleagues develop the skills needed for a greener future. It isn’t just about bringing new talent into our business, we also offer apprenticeships as a development opportunity to our existing colleagues. At E.ON, we promote internal development and currently have almost 240 existing colleagues on an apprenticeship programme

Across our business, we currently have more than 300 apprentices on over 90 different schemes and offer apprenticeships at all levels including apprenticeships in customer service, accountancy, HR, legal and cyber security.
