Menopause Matters: encouraging conversations and support at E.ON
Back in 2017, E.ON became the UK’s first menopause-friendly energy company and that was just the start of our commitment to supporting the increased awareness of this important topic.
Today, E.ON’s Menopause Matters Network plays a vital role in fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace for colleagues who are navigating menopause, and the people around them who want to help.
By providing a safe space for colleagues to share their experiences, access resources, and receive support, Menopause Matters ensures the menopause is openly discussed and understood across the organisation. The colleague-led network not only empowers those directly affected but also educates managers and colleagues, promoting a broader understanding of how menopause impacts everyone.
We spoke to Lisa James, Senior People Champion, about her experience with the network and just how important these conversations and support are.
If you were to describe the Menopause Matters Network in five words, what would they be?
I would describe the Menopause Matters Network as supportive, educational, empowering, inclusive, and focused on advocacy.
What support does E.ON provide as a company to those who benefit from the Menopause Matters Network?
E.ON provides a range of support for employees through the Menopause Matters Network. We actively promote awareness, knowledge-sharing, research, and policy changes related to menopause. Menopause Matters offers a platform for sharing personal stories and experiences, particularly through our monthly Menopause Cafes. These cafes provide colleagues with the opportunity to discuss their experiences in a safe and open space.
People can join virtually, participate in the conversation, or simply listen quietly if they prefer. We receive valuable feedback from those who choose to listen, emphasising that everyone can take what they need from these sessions.
Additionally, we provide E.ON with guides for both employees and managers, ensuring that we are supporting not only individuals experiencing menopause but also the line managers who play a critical role in their wellbeing.
How do you foster an inclusive and supportive environment within the Menopause Matters Network?
We actively encourage diverse voices and experiences within the Menopause Matters Network. Through the use of promotional materials and awareness-focused content, we reflect the diversity of our workforce.
We ensure that resources are accessible to everyone by hosting the menopause network on platforms. To foster inclusivity, we also collaborate with other networks, such as embRace and LGBTQ+ and Friends. We’ve shared external webinars and are making efforts to connect with the trans community to ensure broader support. For example, during Pride month we shared external webinars with our LGBTQ+ and Friends network.
The aim is not just to support those directly experiencing symptoms but also to raise awareness among line managers and colleagues since menopause touches everyone in some way. While our cafes provide a space for general discussions, we also focus on specific topics, such as Menopause Awareness Day. As an example, one of our Occupational Health practitioners will be hosting one of our virtual café on the topic of HRT on the run up to World Menopause Day in October.
Can you describe a time when you initiated a project that focused on supporting individuals experiencing menopause?
We have initiated the process to become an accredited menopause-friendly employer, which is an important step forward. There is still a great deal of ongoing work around educating people about menopause, and we've recently reviewed and updated our e-learning content.
A major area of focus is supporting line managers by providing them with the right tools and resources to have meaningful conversations and offer appropriate support. This continuous improvement effort is essential to creating a more supportive environment for all.
How do you encourage participation in the Menopause Matters Network?
We regularly publish content through the network and host Menopause Cafes, which are key to keeping the conversation alive. Recently, we promoted the Menopause Matters Network at the E.ON Next Leaders event, which was attended by over 900 leaders. This provided an opportunity to have inclusive conversations with a wide range of people, including male colleagues who are keen to support their wives and loved ones. Additionally, we promote the network during National Inclusion Week with menopause stands and cafes, ensuring broad engagement across the company.
What does the future look like for the Menopause Matters Network and what goals are you looking forward to achieving?
Looking ahead, our goal is to grow the network even further and ensure that we reach a wider audience, including tailored support for managers. We’re committed to expanding our efforts to ensure that everyone in the workplace is aware of menopause and feels supported, regardless of their role or experience.
