Life at E.ON, according to our apprentices
This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re putting our apprentices front and centre and have asked them to share what an apprenticeship at E.ON is really like.
Apprenticeships at E.ON can take many different forms. From customer service and lighting and grid apprenticeships to degree apprenticeships in project management or data science, there’s something for everyone.
At E.ON, we currently have 291 apprentices on over 90 schemes across a range of levels from intermediate to higher/degree level, providing apprentices with a thorough, well designed and fulfilling learning experience.
We spoke to just a few of our apprentices to see what they really think of an apprenticeship at E.ON.
Becky Nash, Highways Lighting and Grid Apprentice, who is in the fourth year of her scheme, shared: “My main role when I first started was just to take in and learn as much as possible but over the years my responsibilities and role within the team have changed. I am now a HGV driver, a jointers mate and a jointer under supervision. I work on the Staffordshire contract, so the people of Staffordshire are used to seeing us out and about every day. We work on the streetlights which you wouldn't expect to have an impact on the community, but it does. The public are always so grateful when we go and fix or swap the streetlights near their homes.”
Wayne Hathway, Growth and Optimisation Senior Analyst and currently completing his Improvement Level Practitioner Level 4 apprenticeship, said: “I wanted to do this apprenticeship to support my personal development and sharpen skills in an area I feel passionate about. I’m hoping it’ll provide me with a deeper knowledge to put into practice the skills which will make me more effective in my role.”
Daniel Langford, Highways Lighting Apprentice
, said: “My daily tasks can include anything from making earth blocks and cut outs for different streetlights to dressing the columns ready for putting in the ground and jointing. Every day is different, and I am learning new skills all the time. I like learning whilst working whilst being in a practical environment and learning from the people that I work with who have lots of knowledge and experience to share.”
Richard Key, Talent Acquisition Manger, who has recently completed his Senior Leader Apprenticeship and is now starting an Executive MBA, shared what he most enjoys about an apprenticeship: “Networking – meeting people from varying backgrounds both personally and professionally has been an eye opener, it really does make you think differently. Being exposed to areas outside of my comfort zone or areas of expertise has helped to challenge and push myself further than I would in my day-to-day role. It has very quickly opened opportunities to other elements outside of my core role.”
And over on our degree apprenticeship programme. Our degree apprentices study for a fully funded degree while working full-time, earning a competitive salary and developing the skills needed to succeed in a greener, more sustainable future. During the four- or five-year programme, apprentices work on several placements across the business, aligned to their academic work at university.
Hear from three of our current degree apprentices, Millie, Raees and Jacob, on what a typical day looks like for them.
We’re committed to apprenticeships and the role they play in upskilling our colleagues and future generations with the skills needed to lead and thrive in the new energy world. Since 2018, we’ve enrolled over 1,000 new and existing colleagues and we’re proud to be the top apprenticeship employer in the UK energy and utilities sector, and in the top 30 overall.
