How we’re supporting the community surrounding Blackburn Meadows

Jess Dhariwal, Plant Manager at our Blackburn Meadows biomass plant in Sheffield, is passionate about supporting the communities around the renewable energy plant.

We’re proud to be making a positive difference to the lives of people up and down the country. From making homes warmer and more comfortable to live in, to championing the causes that matter across society. And never is this more evident than in the communities directly around our sites.

One such example is Blackburn Meadows, our Sheffield-based biomass-fuelled combined heat and power plant which powers up to 69,000 homes and businesses in the South Yorkshire region.

But that’s not the only positive contribution the plant and its people are making for the benefit of those living nearby. Jess Dhariwal, Blackburn Meadows Plant Manager, tells us more.

Can tell us about Blackburn Meadows and what makes it so special?

Blackburn Meadows is a renewable energy CHP (combined heat and power) plant in Sheffield that exemplifies the fusion of cutting-edge technology and meaningful community engagement. We generate electricity from waste wood that would otherwise go to landfill and provide low-carbon heat to Sheffield’s district heating network.

What truly makes us special is our commitment to the local community. Through initiatives like the Tinsley Community Fund, we support projects ranging from mental health services to children’s holiday clubs, ensuring our impact far goes beyond energy production to enrich lives and strengthen the Sheffield community.

What does a typical working day look like for you?

As the Plant Manager, my role involves overseeing all aspects of the power station’s operations to ensure safety, efficiency, and reliability.

A typical day includes team meetings to discuss performance metrics, coordinating maintenance activities, and driving strategic projects like the HYDESS hydrogen initiative or the expansion of Sheffield’s district heating network. I also spend time collaborating with external partners and community groups, ensuring that our technical and community-focused efforts align with our sustainability goals.

Can you summarise the activities you and your team undertake to support the local community?

We are dedicated to making a positive impact in Sheffield through a variety of initiatives. We supply low-carbon heat to local businesses, provide educational opportunities to inspire young engineers, and support charities such as Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

One of our key contributions is the Tinsley Community Fund, which provides grants to local organisations for vital services such as mental health support, holiday clubs for children, and other essential community activities. These efforts reflect our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

Why do you think supporting the local community is so important?

Supporting the local community is vital because it creates a symbiotic relationship between the business and the people we serve. It’s about being a responsible neighbour and ensuring that our work benefits the broader society. By addressing local needs — whether through sustainability initiatives, education, or community programs — we can help build a resilient, prosperous, and connected community. Ultimately, when the community thrives, so do we.

Are there any standout community activities you’re particularly proud to support?

Two activities stand out for me. The Tinsley Community Fund is a remarkable initiative that provides essential grants to local organisations. It supports day-to-day activities such as mental health services, social programs, and holiday clubs for children, making a real difference in people’s lives. I’m also incredibly proud of our partnership with Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and the annual ‘Recycle your Christmas Tree’ initiative, which ties sustainability with fundraising to support a really important cause.

What kind of feedback have you received from your contacts within the local community?

The feedback we’ve received has been incredibly encouraging. Organisations like the Tinsley Community Fund and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice have expressed their appreciation for the tangible impact of our support.

Local residents have shared how much they value the programs we help fund too, from affordable heating solutions to mental health services. These positive responses reinforce the importance of our efforts and motivate us to continue finding ways to contribute.

What advice would you give to other organisations looking to support their local communities?

My advice is to start by listening to your community and understanding their needs. Look for ways to align your business’s strengths with those needs — for example, we use our expertise in energy to support sustainability and educational initiatives. Building strong partnerships with local charities, schools, and organisations is also crucial, as collaboration amplifies your impact. Most importantly, ensure your efforts are genuine and sustainable to build trust and lasting relationships.

Can you summarise the impact you feel E.ON’s support is having on Blackburn Meadows’ local communities?

E.ON’s support has transformed Blackburn Meadows into more than just a power station — it’s a community partner. Through initiatives like the Tinsley Community Fund, the district heating network, and educational partnerships, we’re addressing local challenges while building a sustainable future. These efforts are creating real, measurable benefits, from reducing carbon emissions to empowering local organisations and individuals to thrive.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention?

I’d like to emphasise that none of this would be possible without the incredible partnerships we’ve built with local organisations, charities, and residents. Tackling challenges like climate change and community inequality requires a collaborative effort, and I’m proud of the role Blackburn Meadows plays in this journey.

I’m excited about what the future holds and look forward to continuing to make a positive difference in Sheffield.
