E.ON installer arriving at customer home

How we’re helping to make homes across the country more energy efficient

Our Green Funding Solutions team work with housing providers, local authorities and residents up and down the UK to install a range of energy efficiency measures to make homes warmer, healthier and less expensive to run.

Colleagues across our business are helping to transform homes across the country – including our Green Funding Solutions team. The team is responsible for ensuring we’re delivering our energy efficiency retrofit programme, which sees us install energy efficiency measures into existing homes, effectively and efficiently. And it’s not small numbers. The team supported over 12,000 vulnerable households and installed 14,000 energy efficiency measures in 2022 and 2023 alone.

These types of projects are crucial. Households across the UK can access government grants through E.ON to help pay for energy efficient home improvements. These projects address the pressing issue of families already struggling financially, who are living in inefficient homes and having to manage their high energy bills. By drawing on government funding to install energy efficiency measures, our Green Funding Solutions team can provide these upgrades free of charge or at a reduced cost to families and households.

Working closely with residents

Open communication is key to the success of our energy efficiency projects. We talk regularly with residents to keep them up to date, involved and engaged throughout the retrofit journey. We answer any questions residents may have to ensure they fully understand the process, making sure they’re happy and comfortable on the journey to greater energy efficiency.

Working with existing properties presents its own set of difficulties. Homes are deeply personal spaces for residents, and we must ensure that we respect their living environment while carrying out necessary upgrades. This means being extra careful to leave homes in the same condition we found them.

We strive to address the inevitable challenges transparently to ensure we build trust among all stakeholders and create a collaborative atmosphere, which often leads to the best solutions.

Katie Chipps, Senior Delivery Manager in our Green Funding Solutions team, shares how this engagement with residents, like Dominic, works in practice on our energy efficiency project with HAIG Housing.

We’re working with HAIG Housing, which provides affordable homes to veterans, to improve 360 homes with insulation, solar panels, modern heating controls and remote energy monitoring with funding from the Government’s Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund.

Delivering real impact for UK households

We actively seek feedback from all households after they have received upgrades to better understand their experience and any benefits the energy efficiency measures have brought them.

Common positive themes include increased comfort, with many residents reporting warmer homes that have significantly improved their quality of life. For example, Glennis recently had external wall insulation installed by our Green Funding Solutions team and shared her experience of previously having to put hot water bottles under her dogs’ bed at night due to the cold. After receiving insulation upgrades, she now enjoys a warm and cosy home, and doesn’t need to use water bottles for her dogs anymore, even on the coldest, darkest nights.

As homes become more efficient, residents can enjoy significant savings on their energy bills. Upgrades like improved insulation help keep heat in, lowering heating costs and easing financial pressures on families. In fact, many residents express relief over reduced financial stress. They appreciate noticeable savings on their energy bills which alleviates some money worries.

Living in a more energy efficiency home also contributes to a reduction in carbon emissions. By consuming less energy, individual households can help lower demand on our national power network. And this collective effort supports the UK in reaching its net zero targets.

The transformative impact improving home energy efficiency has on families and communities, made possible by the available funding, is invaluable. Without this financial support, many of the essential upgrades we provide would simply not be feasible.
