How degree apprentice Amrit is shaping the future of engineering
Our award-winning degree apprentice scheme is a great way for colleagues to gain valuable work experience through a number of placements while studying for their degree. Here, we meet Amrit and hear how he’s finding the scheme so far.
Meet Amrit Kuldip, one of our inspiring degree apprentices at E.ON, currently studying Electro-Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham. At just 19, Amrit is already making strides in the world of engineering, balancing academic excellence with real-world impact.
Here’s a look at his experience, in his own words:
My journey so far:
I started my degree apprenticeship in the Mechanical Design Team, and I’m currently working on Electrical Design within the Customer Energy Solutions Design Team. The variety in placements allows me to build a well-rounded skill set across both disciplines — a perfect fit for someone with a passion for maths, physics, and the logical problem-solving world of engineering.
Electro-mechanical engineering bridges both the electrical and mechanical realms, and as technology evolves, that intersection becomes even more important. Being trained in both areas equips me with the tools to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
Why I chose E.ON
From the outset, E.ON stood out as a company that genuinely values its people. The friendly, collaborative environment makes it easy to thrive and grow. But more than that, I was drawn to E.ON’s purpose — working on projects that help make the world a better, more sustainable place. It’s incredibly fulfilling to be part of a team that’s focused on creating real, meaningful change for communities across the UK.
Enjoying the E.ON culture
One of the things I appreciate most about E.ON is the culture. Everyone is incredibly supportive and approachable. There’s no hesitation in asking questions or seeking guidance because the team is always willing to help. There’s also a strong degree apprentice community here, which has been a fantastic source of support. It’s great to share experiences with others who are on a similar journey.
Lessons I’ve learned
Since joining E.ON, I’ve seen a huge improvement in my communication skills. Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds has broadened my perspective and helped me better understand different ways of thinking and problem-solving.
On the technical side, the blend of workplace experience and university study has deepened my engineering knowledge massively. It’s been the best of both worlds — learning through real-world application while building academic foundations.
My advice for future apprentices
If you’re considering a degree apprenticeship, my advice is simple: go for it — if you’re ready to commit. It’s not easy, and the time and effort required are significant. But the benefits far outweigh the challenges.
You’ll gain a degree without the debt, get paid while learning, and accumulate five years of industry experience that sets you apart. The course runs over five years — just two years more than a standard university degree — and it often leads directly into a full-time role.
Balancing university assignments with work responsibilities can be tough, but I’ve found that E.ON is very understanding of our academic commitments. My team supports me fully, and that flexibility makes all the difference in managing both sides of the apprenticeship.
Passionate about making a difference
At E.ON, we believe in empowering the next generation of engineers, innovators, and playmakers. Amrit’s story is just one example of how our degree apprenticeship programme is shaping bright futures while driving forward a more sustainable energy landscape.
