Growing green skills with LinkedIn Learning
Hear from Luke Mckend, Senior Director at LinkedIn, on how E.ON’s partnership with LinkedIn Learning is democratising learning for every employee - from technicians to corporate leaders - addressing critical green skills gaps and preparing for a sustainable future.
The workplace is evolving rapidly, driven notably by two key forces: advancements in technology and the UK’s ambition to reaching net zero by 2050. At the heart of this change is the recognition that skills - and the ability to continually develop them - are key to navigating this shift. E.ON, a forward-thinking partner of LinkedIn, is embracing the power of learning to prepare its people and business for the needs of tomorrow, as well as today.
Why upskilling matters now more than ever
According to LinkedIn data, the skills required for jobs globally will change at least 70% by 2030.
Companies with strong learning cultures will be better equipped to navigate these shifts, retaining 57% more talent than those that don’t. And for employees, the benefits are equally compelling:
- 7 in 10 report feeling a greater sense of connection through learning
- 8 in 10 say it adds meaning and purpose to their work
Which is why it’s been great to see how E.ON has embraced the opportunity to make learning a cornerstone of its culture, empowering employees to grow professionally and personally while supporting its ambitious sustainability goals.
Closing the green skills gap
E.ON is actively taking steps to equip its employees with the skills needed for a transition to a green economy. But the stakes are high: LinkedIn data reveals that demand for green talent in the UK surged by 46% from 2023 to 2024, outpacing the overall hiring by 72%. Yet, the supply of green talent has grown by just 5.3% over the same period, leaving a significant gap.
Gen Z is perhaps the most promising target for global efforts to double green talent, but today, only 1 in 20 Gen Z workers have green skills. Gen Z will make up one-third of the workforce by 2030, a key staging post for achieving net zero. But at the current rate of progress, only 1 in 10 Gen Z workers will have green skills by then.
Globally, the challenge is even greater. If current trends continue, the green talent pool will need to double by 2050 to meet the demand. One of the ways E.ON is bolstering green skills is by ensuring employees at all levels have access to learning opportunities through LinkedIn Learning. This has ensured that employees across all roles and levels have access to training and development opportunities in areas like sustainability, generative AI, leadership, and more.
Empowering growth through learning
In just two years, E.ON’s workforce has achieved remarkable results:
- 97% of LinkedIn Learning licences at E.ON have been activated
- 1,850 UK employees have viewed more than 95,000 videos.
- Sustainability topics rank among the most popular courses, underscoring employees’ passion for contributing to a greener future.
- Other areas of focus include generative AI, leadership, and personal growth—ensuring employees stay ahead as the workplace evolves.
Sarah Farmer, Director of Organisational Development & Engagement at E.ON UK, captures the impact of this partnership: "To transition towards a green economy, we need a workforce with green skills. At E.ON, we have a strong range of initiatives to help people get into green jobs - and LinkedIn Learning is helping us to democratise access to green skills training across our entire organisation."
E.ON’s roll-out of LinkedIn Learning means that employees are able to engage with curated learning paths, personalised learning, and have a personalised learning experience thanks to AI-powered recommendations, themed challenges, and development networks, making learning accessible and relevant to everyone. By fostering this culture of continuous learning, E.ON ensures that its people feel empowered to grow, both professionally and personally.
In a world where change is the only constant, E.ON’s partnership with LinkedIn Learning shows what’s possible when businesses commit to empowering their people with learning at all stages of their career.
