From animal bones to better homes: how we’re improving comfort and energy efficiency for residents in Filey
We’re proud to be working with social housing providers across the country to deliver energy efficiency upgrades to homes with low energy efficiency ratings as part of the Government's Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF).
We’re committed to making homes warmer, more comfortable and more energy efficient by installing measures such as improved insulation, heat pumps, and solar panels.
And this is exactly what we’re doing at Hungate Court in Filey, North Yorkshire. We’re installing external wall insulation, solar panels, new double-glazed windows, improved ventilation and a shared ground loop heating system.
How we’re helping Filey residents
Hungate Court is a block of 32 flats in Filey – all of which are in need of energy efficiency improvements. And we’re now working to address this by delivering a green and efficient heating system alongside better insulation. This will improve residents’ comfort at home and support them in achieving lower energy use and therefore cheaper energy bills.
Marco Aulino, Senior Delivery Manager in Green Funding Solutions at E.ON UK, is leading the delivery of the project in Filey and shared his experiences of working on this project: “So far, the project has been unpredictable and exciting. From uncovering animal bones during the dig phase to getting to know the residents personally, this pioneering project has been brilliant to lead on. This is the first project where we’re delivering a shared ground loop heating system alongside a complex portfolio of measures, and this took an incredible amount of effort and planning.
“I’ve gotten to know the residents by name and truly understand the benefits this project will bring them all. The residents have been incredibly excited about the works as they know how much these energy efficiency measures will positively impact their bills and comfort.”
Thanks to improved insulation, residents will live in warmer homes meaning it will be faster and cheaper to heat their properties during winter. Plus, the ground loop heating system, also known as a ground source heat pump, extracts heat from the ground outside and transfers it inside to provide heating and hot water for your home. This innovative heating source is more efficient than a traditional gas boiler which could lead to significant bills savings for the residents.
Previously some of the residents admitted they would not use their electric storage heaters in winter as they were concerned about their energy bills. So installing the shared ground loop heating system will mean they worry less about heating their homes during the cold, winter months in the future.
We’re also installing 79kW of solar panels on the roof of the building which will generate approximately 2.5kW per property, saving residents an average of £200 to £300 on their annual electricity bills1.
We’re expecting to have the work completed before Christmas, with some cosmetic updates taking place in January. We’ll check in with Marco in a few months’ time to see how the project is progressing so watch this space.
