Embracing neurodiversity at E.ON: insights from our Neurodiversity Network
At E.ON, fostering an inclusive workplace is at the core of our values. We kick off National Inclusion Week by shining a light on our Neurodiversity Network, one of our colleague-led inclusion networks.
Neurodiversity means that there are differences in how people's brains work, meaning cognitive processes may differ from the neurotypical majority. This can lead to diagnoses such as autism, ADHD, or dyslexia.
As part of our dedication, E.ON has joined Neurodiversity in Business (NiB), which is an initiative to help ensure greater workplace inclusion of the neurodivergent community.
Our Neurodiversity Network is contributing towards an inclusive workplace where neurodiversity is celebrated, valued, and embraced, ensuring that every individual can thrive, contribute their unique talents, and achieve their full potential.
We spoke to John Martin, Coventry Solutions Strategy and Co-ordination Lead, to discuss his experiences, goals, and the impact the Neurodiversity Network is having across the company. Here's what we learned:
If you were to describe the Neurodiversity Network in five words, what would they be?
I would describe the network as: open, emotional, inspiring, honest and challenging.
Can you share an example of a time when you provided support or advocacy for a neurodiverse colleague?
As a parent with a neurodiverse child, I’ve provided support and guidance to colleagues who are just starting their journey with a child who potentially may have a neurodiverse condition. This has been advice based on my personal experience, especially around the ‘diagnosis’ journey and then the associated challenges around aspects such as choice of school, etc.
How do you foster an inclusive and supportive environment within the Neurodiversity Network?
We always provide time for members to share their stories and their personal background. The importance of listening and having time for each other is a key part of the network, and one that we make sure we prioritise.
Can you describe a time when you initiated or contributed to a project or initiative that focused on supporting neurodiverse individuals?
The network is always looking for ways to support neurodiverse colleagues. One recent project is a new training program that aims to:
- Provide all employees with an opportunity to develop a knowledge of neurodiversity conditions
- Offer focus training to line managers. It has been recognised that the role of a line manager is pivotal to providing appropriate support to a colleague with a neurodiverse condition, who may think they have a condition or a parent or carer who is supporting a child with a neurodiverse condition.
- Perform a policy and process led gap analysis of E.ON to highlight those areas where we need to provide additional support for those with or impacted by neurodiverse conditions.
- Improve support for directors and senior managers around communications and strategy setting on neurodiversity.
How do you encourage participation in the Neurodiversity Network?
We provide regular opportunities for members of the community to share their stories within a supportive environment, as a point of inspiration and reflection. When a network member is seeking out support, potentially when they're facing a new or more challenging situation, there are other network members who will listen and support the colleague with their personal development journey.
What does the future look like for the Neurodiversity Network and what goals are you looking forward to achieving?
The continued focus on developing a workplace that is neuroinclusive involves creating an environment where all employees, regardless of how their brains function, feel supported and valued. This means not only recognising and accommodating neurological differences also ensuring that every team member has the opportunity to contribute with their unique strengths.
Celebrating equality, diversity and inclusion at E.ON
The Neurodiversity Network demonstrates E.ON’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. As the network continues to grow, so too does its positive impact on the lives of employees, ensuring that everyone can be their authentic selves at work.
By fostering open conversations, advocating for greater understanding, and driving meaningful initiatives, the Neurodiversity Network is helping E.ON create a truly inclusive workplace for all.
