Black History Month: Celebrating through stories, music, and more
Throughout October, E.ON has been marking Black History Month in an engaging and vibrant way, bringing employees together to celebrate Black culture, history, and achievements.
With the embRace network leading the charge, E.ON’s celebration this year has embodied the theme “Reclaiming Narratives,” with events designed to uplift Black voices, reclaim cultural legacies, and honour the richness of Black heritage.
From insightful talks to fantastic street food, here’s a look at how E.ON has celebrated with its colleagues.
A spotlight on inspiring narratives and art
E.ON hosted an exclusive talk by Dr Willard Wigan, a world-renowned micro-sculptor known for creating intricate sculptures small enough to fit within the eye of a needle. Dr Wigan shared his inspiring journey, recounting the challenges he’s overcome as an artist and his drive to create one-of-a-kind art that celebrates the strength of Black history and personal resilience. This special event at E.ON’s Trinity site in Nottingham provided staff with a unique opportunity to witness art that defies limits and hear a powerful story of perseverance.
Celebrating through music: a playlist by the embRace network
Music plays a pivotal role in shaping and reflecting Black culture, and this year, the embRace Network curated a special playlist celebrating the trailblazers and anthems that define Black musical history.
Jude Topham, a member of the embRace leadership committee, put together a dynamic selection that spans genres, generations, and geographies, highlighting both pioneering and emerging Black artists. Available to employees across all E.ON sites, the playlist is a tribute to the legacy and ongoing influence of Black musicians around the world.
Workshops for health and mindfulness
At E.ON’s Westwood location, employees were treated to a transformative session with mindfulness expert and DJ, Kareen Griffiths. Known for her “Calmify Effect,” Kareen blends mindfulness practices with music, guiding participants in a journey of reflection and relaxation.
Her workshop underscored the importance of reclaiming mental health and balance, aligning with the theme of “Reclaiming Narratives.” The session encouraged staff to pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves in a powerful demonstration of self-care as a tool for resilience and empowerment.
Culinary celebrations with Caribbean flavours
What would a celebration of Black culture be without food that speaks to its roots? E.ON’s canteens served up a feast of Caribbean street food, with a special visit from Esmie’s Caribbean Street Food van at Westwood. Employees had the chance to savour traditional dishes that bring the flavours of the Caribbean islands to life and a chance to support Black-owned businesses.
Reclaiming Narratives: exploring Black History Month magazine
E.ON also distributed copies of the Black History Month Magazine, encouraging employees to dive into articles, stories, and reflections on Black history and culture. With a focus on reclaiming health, names, and the arts, the magazine aligns with this year’s theme, urging readers to consider how individual narratives shape the larger fabric of society.
A celebration of connection
From insightful talks and workshops to nourishing food and music, E.ON’s Black History Month celebrations have underscored the significance of reclaiming and honouring narratives that are often underrepresented. E.ON is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where these stories are heard, respected, and celebrated.
As we look towards the future, and not just within the month of October,, E.ON’s embRace network continues to celebrate Black History Month with events that inspire, uplift, and foster connection among employees.
