Since their introduction over a decade ago, smart meters have been at the forefront of the nation’s transition to an improved energy infrastructure across Britain.
Smart meters have moved us forward to a world where the effort is taken out of meter reading and the guesswork is removed from billing, helping customers get more accurate and up-to-date bills without the need to read their meter.
And smart meters can also help customers save energy and money. They enable people to see their energy use and what they’re spending in real time. With a smart meter, customers get personalised and timely information to help them better understand their energy use, arming them with the tools to help them budget, make savings and use energy more efficiently.
Like any transition of this scale, the rollout of smart meters has not been without its challenges over the years. But right now, millions of E.ON Next customers are reaping the benefits smart meters can bring, and here’s what some of them have said:
Mairead said: “I didn't really have an opinion on smart meters before we had one. My friends had recommended smart meters to me saying it's a really good way of staying in control and just being aware of the energy you're using and the money you're spending on your energy. I see everything on the in-home display – everything for the heating, the gas that’s being used, the electricity.
“The smart meter helps us be in control of the energy we're using, how much money we're spending, and it just isn't less it's one less thing to worry about in terms of change with life.”
Another customer, Kamran, told us: “For the future and for the long term, I think knowing what you're spending and where you can control it is going to be a basic habit and necessity for the future.”
And Elizabeth said: “[We thought] ‘Why do we want a smart meter, we’ve managed this long without one?’ I suppose it was ignorance. You don't know and human beings don't like change. I called it a brain in a box, let's see how it works. All of a sudden, you have mountains of information there and I thought, ‘Why didn't we have this years ago?’”
