Fuelling the future with green talent

Meet some of the tech-savvy minds stepping up to create tomorrow’s sustainable solutions.

When you picture a career in tech, do you picture someone hidden away in a lab, surrounded by screens of complex code?

Think again!

Today’s green tech champions are as diverse and dynamic as the energy solutions they’re building, and we’re powering this transformation with the new wave of tech talent that’s needed to shape a sustainable future.

This push for green innovation in energy has never been stronger, and tech talent is at the heart of making it a reality. With innovation and diversity at the heart of our approach, we’re equipping a new generation with the skills needed to drive green change across the energy sector  – from our own Net Zero Training Academy in the West Midlands, to our investments in degree apprenticeships, and our commitment to empowering more women and diversity in tech.

And as part of this mission, we’re collaborating with organisations that share our dedication to creating opportunities, like FDM Group, a tech consultancy known for supporting diverse career paths. Since our partnership began in 2021, we’ve connected with people who not only bring valuable skills but also align with our values around inclusivity and social mobility. Today, four FDM consultants contribute across E.ON, E.ON Next, and npower Business Solutions, while nine former consultants have transitioned to full-time roles within our team. Together, we’re building a workforce that reflects our communities and shares our ambitions.

Supporting apprentices

FDM apprentices inside BBM plant

This year, we’ve expanded our partnership with FDM to include an exciting new degree apprenticeship programme in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University. As part of this initiative, three talented apprentices in the final year of their Digital Technology Solutions studies have joined us on a project developing a new app for E.ON customers as their final project. This hands-on experience gives them a chance to solve real challenges in energy while building something that could make a tangible impact on our operations.

When these apprentices present their final projects in spring, they’ll be showcasing the power of applying classroom knowledge to real-world tech solutions. By giving them a meaningful project to lead, we’re not only shaping their skills but also demonstrating the valuable role of fresh perspectives in tackling sustainability goals. It’s our hope that these students will continue their journeys with us after graduation, transforming from apprentices to full-time innovators in the green energy sector.

This partnership is one of the many ways E.ON is committed to fostering the tech talent needed to make sustainable energy a reality. By providing early-career professionals with real-world experience, we’re empowering them to make a lasting impact on the future of green energy.
