Fuelling innovation and diversity: our commitment to empowering women in tech

Claire Whitmore, Head of Digital Technology at E.ON UK (pictured below), shares her experience of the Women in Business & Tech Expo 2024, the growing enthusiasm for tech careers among women and how E.ON is fostering innovation and diversity in the energy sector.

Attending the Women in Business & Tech Expo was an incredibly inspiring experience. Being surrounded by so many talented women who are passionate about technology and innovation reminded me of why I’m so proud to work at E.ON, a company that truly values diversity and inclusion in STEM.

One thing that really stood out to visitors at our stand was how we foster diversity and inclusion through our various colleague networks such as Fast Forward, Parenting, and Menopause Matters. They were also keen to learn about our flexible working offerings, like hybrid hours, and our Learning & Development platform, My Genius, which supports career growth. The interest in our Women in Leadership programme was particularly high, as people appreciated how we nurture ambitious women and offer them opportunities to rise through the ranks quickly.

The level of interest we generated at our stand was incredible. Over the two days, we had more than 200 people visit — more than double what we were expecting! From students at the start of their tech journeys to experienced professionals, it was clear there is a strong appetite for understanding how E.ON is leading the way in digital transformation.

Many were interested in the specific roles we have available, particularly in areas like data analysis, architecture, engineering, business partnering, or cyber security. I also received a lot of questions about our tech stack, and it was exciting to share how we work with some of the best and most innovative technology available, always pushing boundaries.

The expo wasn’t just about the visitors, it was also inspiring to hear from amazing speakers like Katie Piper, who shared her journey of overcoming adversity, and Baroness Floella Benjamin (who I'm pictured with on the right!), who gave invaluable insights on leadership and resilience. It was a privilege to meet her afterward and exchange advice.

The event reaffirmed E.ON’s commitment to empowering more women in STEM and tech. It’s not just about closing the gender gap, it’s about unlocking new ideas and creating a more inclusive, forward-thinking future for our industry. I left the expo feeling energised and optimistic about the talent and potential I saw over those two days. The future of tech is bright and I’m excited to see how E.ON will continue to be a part of that journey.

We’re now looking forward to following up with many of the attendees and hope to take several of them through to the interview stage as we continue our journey of fostering the next generation of talent at E.ON.
