HAIG Housing

Empowering veterans and building a greener future

At E.ON, we’re proud to partner with HAIG Housing and Building Heroes to support military veterans and their families. Together, we’re enhancing homes with energy efficient upgrades and creating new career pathways for ex-service personnel in the energy sector.

HAIG Housing provides affordable homes to veterans, many of which were built decades ago and lack modern energy efficiency. With funding from the Government’s Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, we’re improving 360 homes with insulation, solar panels, modern heating controls and remote energy monitoring.

These upgrades will help lower energy bills, reduce carbon emissions, and create warmer, more sustainable homes. In conservation areas, where homes feature unique military heritage, we’re taking extra care to balance preservation with progress.

Ian Cartledge, Business Development Manager at E.ON says: “E.ON takes such pride in building partnerships that deliver real social impact. Collaborating with HAIG Housing and Building Heroes allows us to make a meaningful difference—providing veterans and their families with energy-efficient homes while creating career opportunities that empower ex-service personnel to thrive in the growing green energy sector. It's activities like these that truly drive sustainable progress."

Supporting veterans through Building Heroes

Our work doesn’t stop at housing. In partnership with Building Heroes, we’re helping veterans transition into civilian careers by reskilling them as Retrofit Surveyors. With our support, Building Heroes launched a Green Skills/Retrofit Surveyor/Assessor training program, providing participants with the qualifications needed to assess and enhance home energy efficiency.

In March 2024, we celebrated the graduation of the program’s first 12 participants, who earned key certifications, including:

  • ABBE Level 3 in Domestic Energy Assessment
  • ABBE Level 3 for Retrofit Assessors
  • CSCS Green Labourers Card

HAIG Cohorts

We’re delighted to share that all 12 graduates have successfully transitioned into employment, kick-starting their careers as Retrofit Surveyors. This is just the beginning, with more cohorts planned throughout the year.

Looking ahead

At E.ON, we’re dedicated to creating positive societal change — both for the community and the environment. Through our partnerships with HAIG Housing and Building Heroes, we’re not only making homes more energy efficient but also empowering veterans with meaningful career opportunities.
