Empowering the future: How E.ON’s New Energy Academy is fuelling the rise of ‘green jobs’ crucial for a more sustainable tomorrow
Young people with the ability to power Britain’s green revolution and bridge the industry’s growing skills gap are being guided towards the careers of the future by the centre.
The global shift towards clean energy is creating unprecedented opportunities in the job market – a transformation that promises both a brighter future and a thriving workforce.
But a critical question remains: what help is there for young people to help them join the green revolution?
Enter E.ON’s New Energy Academy – a pioneering initiative designed to equip young people with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to thrive in the rapidly expanding world of green jobs.
Far from being a token gesture, the programme addresses a pressing issue: while the UK’s clean energy revolution accelerates, the workforce needed to sustain it is far from ready.
Bridging the Green Skills Gap
The numbers speak volumes.
As the UK commits to achieving net zero by 2050, the National Grid has warned there is a pressing need for 400,000 skilled workers in the energy sector alone.
The green economy is projected to generate up to two million jobs by 2030, according to the International Labor Organization.
Yet, despite the growing demand for ‘green collar’ workers – those employed in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and low-carbon industries – young people could find it challenging to navigate pathways into the burgeoning sector.
Traditional career routes simply aren’t keeping pace with the speed of the energy transition.
Role of the New Energy Academy
E.ON’s New Energy Academy aims to help bridge this gap by offering free, accessible training that demystifies the world of sustainable energy.
Developed in collaboration with industry experts, the academy’s courses cover essential topics such as smart energy systems, electric vehicle infrastructure and the future of heat networks.
More than just educating, the Academy inspires – showing young people a career in green energy is not only possible, but essential.
The initiative isn’t merely about imparting knowledge – it’s about empowerment.
The Academy’s resources help students, apprentices, and job-seekers alike see where they fit into the clean energy revolution.
By making technical subjects relatable and providing real-world context, the Academy paves a clear pathway into a sector that will be vital for us all.
Training Tomorrow’s Energy Leaders
E.ON’s commitment stretches far beyond online learning.
We have also invested in physical green skills hubs, partnering with institutions including Dudley College to develop cutting-edge net-zero training centres.
These schemes offer hands-on experience in installing and maintaining renewable energy systems – directly preparing young workers for a workforce urgently in need of them and their drive and enthusiasm.
A new generation of engineers, energy analysts, and sustainability consultants is already emerging.
And by engaging with initiatives such as the New Energy Academy, young people will not only securing their own futures but ensuring the transition to clean energy has the expertise and purpose it demands.
At the end of last year, our Net Zero Training academy also delivered a training session centred around solar energy and future green skills at Hugh Baird College in Bootle, Liverpool.
Less than a mile away is the Port of Liverpool, where we’re working with the Peel Ports Group to install Britain’s largest roof mounted solar system and support them on their net zero journey.
These initiatives and the E.ON New Energy Academy is making new energy visions a reality – while helping make them work for everyone.
