The missing link: smarter energy needs connectivity

The future of energy isn’t just about producing more renewables – it’s about using them in a more connected way. It’s the key to making the energy transition faster, smarter and more effective.

Germany is already leading the way when it comes to integrating electricity, heat, transport and industry into one flexible, efficient system – a concept known as sector coupling. This can be anything from electric vehicles (EVs) that use energy directly then use their own batteries to store energy, to using heat pumps, which moves energy from one temperature reservoir to another.

The basic idea of sector coupling is simple: instead of treating these sectors separately, we link them together to maximise renewable energy use, reduce waste and accelerate the transition to net zero.

And although the concept may be simple, integrating these systems is actually incredibly complex. How do we balance supply and demand? How do we make sure energy is used at the right time, in the right place, for the best efficiency? That’s where SecoSim – our innovative Sector Coupling Simulation tool – comes in.

secosim

SecoSim is a sophisticated simulation software that models and optimises sector coupling scenarios, helping businesses and cities make data-driven decisions about their energy use. It provides a clear, real-time picture of how different energy sectors – like electricity, heat and transport – can work together to reduce costs, cut CO₂ emissions and improve efficiency.

Already deployed in projects like the Dutch football club Sparta Rotterdam, SecoSim is paving the way for smarter, greener energy systems across Europe.

How does the technology work?

  • Optimises demand-side flexibility – using buildings’ ability to store and slowly release heat to reduce energy demand peaks and improve efficiency
  • Integrates EV (electric vehicle) charging solutions to help balance the grid and allows EVs to store energy in their own batteries
  • Enhances generator and cooling asset efficiency – ensuring energy is used where and when it’s needed most
  • Provides a visual interface to explore energy flows and opportunities, and generates customisable graphs for our teams to analyse what’s working – and what’s not

How could it work for the UK?

With rising energy costs, ambitious net-zero targets, and an evolving energy landscape, businesses and local councils need smarter planning tools. SecoSim’s ability to predict savings, reduce CO₂ emissions and optimise asset investments makes it a powerful driver for the UK’s energy transition.

Whether it’s optimising energy use at stadiums, enhancing district heating networks (like in Sheffield), or making industrial processes more efficient, SecoSim provides the insights needed to build a cleaner, more cost-effective future.

Looking ahead

As we continue to refine and expand SecoSim, its role in shaping the future of sector coupling will only grow. With more projects, more data and more insights, this tool is set to become a key driver of the energy transition - helping us all move toward a smarter, greener future.
