road tripping scotland

Out with the auld, in with the new: road tripping just got more exciting north of the border

Scotland’s EV journey is shifting into high gear… with a host of ultra-rapid chargers popping up across the the North of the country and beyond, we’re making electric travel faster, easier, and more scenic than ever

Scotland… celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes, iconic castles, and friendly locals – and often a dream destination for road trips.

But for EV drivers, that dream can hit a snag — because while Scotland has 1,544 charging points (the second-largest geographic network in the UK), the vast distances between these charging points can be a real challenge.

That’s why at E.ON we’re hitting the accelerator on Scotland’s EV future.

Over the next few months, we’re installing six new ultra-rapid charging locations equipped with 42 cutting-edge chargers delivering 150-300kW of power. With a collective capacity equivalent to the power needs of 40,000 UK homes(1), they’re designed to support both locals and adventurers taking the scenic route. These chargers aren’t just fast — they’re ultra-reliable, getting you back on the road in minutes.

Strategically placed in key locations including Dundee, Edinburgh, Stirling – and even Aberdeen – they’ll make EV travel smoother, whether you’re commuting through the city or exploring the more rugged North of the country.

Aberdeen charging site

Aberdeen leading the charge

Our Aberdeen hub, already in operation at Wellington Circle, south of the city, features 12 ultra-rapid charging bays, four of which provide additional accessibility for disabled users. As our most northern EV charging station in the UK, this hub is strategically positioned at the gateway to the Granite City. It’s designed to provide reliable charging for drivers traveling in and out of the area, ensuring a seamless experience for both locals and visitors.

And this is only the start. With even more sites in the works, our mission is to create a connected network that supports Scotland’s transition to electric mobility and making EV adoption more accessible for everyone.

And elsewhere in the UK…

Our vision for a sustainable EV future doesn’t stop at the Scottish border. Across the UK, we’re building a network that makes electric travel simple and accessible.

In 2024, we introduced 72 ultra-fast charging bays across England and Wales. This includes our first ultra-fast public EV charging hub in Wales, featuring 10 chargers capable of delivering 150 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Similarly, our site at Junction 37 on the M1 near Barnsley offers 12 ultra-fast bays alongside family-friendly facilities, proving that EV charging can be both quick and convenient.

And on the home front, we’ve installed approximately 8,000 EV chargers in customers’ homes and around 2,000 chargers in small businesses, enabling over 50 million miles of charging in 2024 alone.

From Scotland’s dramatic peaks to bustling urban centres, E.ON’s ultra-rapid chargers are empowering drivers to embrace the electric revolution.

Reliable, accessible, and designed with your journey in mind, we’re leading the charge toward a more sustainable energy future.
