Pepperoni? Margherita? How about a slice of sun? 🍕🌞
Yes, you heard that right – we’re making pizza (quite literally!) powered by the sun. In fact, we’re cooking up a whooping 1.3 million of them a year.
What’s better than pizza?
Pizza made with the power of the sun!
While Germany is known as the world’s top sausage-eating country, it turns out they’re also quite partial to a pizza or two. In fact, the average German consumes about 4.6 kilograms — equivalent to the weight of an average dog! — of frozen pizza every year.
But what does their love for pizza have to do with solar energy?
At frozen pizza manufacturers Gustavo Gusto’s plant in Thuringia, central Germany, we’ve installed a solar photovoltaic (PV) system covering 2,300 square metres of rooftop space which is working hard to generate enough solar energy to produce more than 1.3 million frozen pizzas each year!
But this isn’t just about delicious, cheesy goodness. It’s about making pizza in a climate-friendly way.
Thanks to this solar system, the plant saves up to 132 tons of CO2 every year. Who knew a frozen pizza could be so green?
The frozen pizza manufacturer produces several hundred thousand pizzas every day at two sites in Germany. At their Artern plant in Thuringia, the focus is on using this solar energy right where it’s generated — directly powering the entire production process. The solar panels on the roof supply clean energy straight to the production halls below. Any extra power gets fed back into the grid during off-peak times, like weekends, making sure no slice (pun intended!) of sunshine goes to waste.
Thanks to this solar-powered pizza production, we’re generating enough to satisfy the cravings of more than 130,000 pizza fans across the country.
