Luke Murphy MP visits London’s best kept energy secret
Beneath the bustling streets of London is a hidden power station that supplies low-carbon and cost-efficient energy right into the heart of the city. It’s called Citigen, and it provides heating and cooling to the equivalent of 11,300 homes from the Guildhall to the Barbican centre, with coverage of over 6km.
We’re proud of the positive impact Citigen is having on the city’s energy transition, and were just as proud to welcome Luke Murphy, the Labour MP for Basingstoke, on a tour of the underground district heating network so that he could see for himself one of our cutting-edge energy systems.
As elected chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Climate Change and a member of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero select committee, Luke Murphy MP is an important voice in Government for helping to make new energy work, which is why we were pleased to give him insights into this, one of our most innovative solutions to urban energy. He was given a tour of the underground Citigen facility as well as a presentation on heating networks and the kinds of SMART technologies that make them possible.
We know that the best way to make new energy work is by suppliers, regulators, and government working together in the interests of everyone to ensure lower bills and cleaner energy. That’s why we hope to welcome Mr Murphy and colleagues to more of our sites in future, so we can give them more insights from the front line of the energy transition.
