2024 Wrapped again: Another look back at some forward thinking

As we prepare to welcome 2025 we thought we’d take a look back at some of our highlights over the past year – the big innovations, the impactful projects, the ideas that are inspiring the energy future.

 

Our E.ON Drive Testing Lab is shaping the mobility of the future. It's here where we're collaborating with leading automotive and tech brands to perfect EV charging and future energy solutions.

 

 

 

Could production of your favourite mint choc chip or vanilla make a difference to poorly pets? In southern Sweden we’re working with ice cream makers SIA Glass and the Halland Animal Hospital in Slöinge, through our E.ON ectogrid™ technology which captures waste heat from the ice cream factory’s cooling process, giving the animal hospital a more affordable, sustainable and energy-efficient sustainable heat supply.

 

 

 

 

 

Driving innovation from the heart of Silicon Valley, our Innovation Garage lives in an iconic – and literal – garage in Palo Alto, California (birthplace of HP, Apple and many others). Here it's the energy transition we're driving forward, collaborating with climate tech and green energy start-ups, fuelling our ambitions to truly be the playmaker in the energy transformation.

 

 

Talking of major tech companies, how about joining more than 1,000 tech enthusiasts, all racing against the clock to solve AI and cutting-edge technology challenges. Our digital team joined the world’s largest generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) hackathon led by Google Cloud and electric motorsports series Formula E.

 

 

 

And sticking with the AI theme, we spoke to our friends at E.ON Next Veloce Racing on how AI is turbocharging Extreme E in the fast-paced world of motorsports – from car performance through to fan engagement. 

 

 

 

 

Education, Education, Education. E.ON announced it was strengthening its commitment to building a more sustainable energy future by expanding its work with Dudley College of Technology to develop a new net zero solutions training centre. This collaboration will equip students with the skills to lead the charge in low-carbon technologies – and ensure the West Midlands remains at the forefront of energy innovation and benefits from the energy transition.

Our newest energy efficiency technology platform calls on 30 million lines of data to inform and support local authorities as they tackle fuel poverty, helping to tackle some of the estimated 3.2 million homes in fuel poverty in England. Called PropSol, it uses multiple data sets to pinpoint which homes are most vulnerable and paint a specific picture of buildings (and the families within) which could most benefit from energy upgrades.

 

 

In October we welcomed HRH The Princess Royal to our Blackburn Meadows renewable energy plant to mark 10 years of power generation at the Sheffield site, as we also announced major investment plans to expand our district heating network and the potential benefits for cities such as Sheffield in cleaner air, more affordable energy and new jobs and skills.

 

 

We joined a number of large and well-known businesses in the Mayor of London’s Better Futures Innovation Challenge, setting a challenge to some of London’s SMEs and start-ups on bringing the benefits of the energy transition to a broader range of households and communities, beyond high-income homeowners.

 

 

We partnered with innovative Australian energy platform Amber to offer our solar and battery and EV customers real-time access to dynamic energy prices, meaning they can take advantage of charging when the cost of energy is cheaper and selling power when prices are higher – unlocking the full value of their home batteries, while staying in control. Amber's pioneering technology is set to change the way UK households and businesses interact with energy. By offering real-time access to dynamic energy prices, Amber gives consumers the power to make informed decisions about when to use electricity.
