A day at the museum: the evolution of energy with Everything Electric Show
Taking a tour around our Living Museum of Energy – buildings that are centuries old, but which house the very latest in sustainable heating and cooler technology - with the team from the Everything Electric Show
We welcomed the team from the Everything Electric Show to our district heating mission control in the heart of London’s Square Mile to take a look at what we think is a pretty innovative piece of kit which is the latest addition to this Living Museum of Energy!
Why Living Museum? Well, our Citigen site blends in to its City surroundings, as it sits behind two Grade II Listed Building facades. But actually, its story goes back to the early 19th century. Those two buildings have been a cold store for the nearby meat market, and a power station fed by, in turn, coal, then oil, then gas.
Today though, alongside its combined heat and power engines, Citigen houses the very latest in heating tech – three water source heat pumps totalling more than 4 megawatts (and 2.7MW of cooling) , supported by three boreholes that go 200m deep under the city streets to take a source of renewable warmth from the London Aquifer.
Citigen is the heart of a 22km network feeding heating and cooling to connected buildings around the City – including other such historic buildings like the Guildhall and the actual Museum of London.
