E.ON welcomes GB Energy and offshore wind renewables drive
One of the biggest names in the UK energy market has thrown its support behind the government’s creation of GB Energy and its commitment to boost the country’s offshore wind capabilities.
Yesterday (25 July 2024), Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, and Ed Miliband – Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero – confirmed details of how the new nationally-owned energy company will function. A key component will see a partnership leveraged with the Crown Estate – which owns the vast majority of Britain’s seabed, stretching up to 12 nautical miles from the mainland – to create a new generation of offshore wind farms.
Now, E.ON – which has been a pioneer in the development of offshore and onshore wind, and through E.ON Next supplies millions of UK homes with electricity and energy solutions including as heat pumps, solar and batteries – has welcomed the news.
Chris Norbury, Chief Executive of E.ON UK, said: “It’s great to see this strong and ambitious move by the government to create GB Energy and back renewable technologies.
“Above all else it underscores the vital role energy must play in our national growth strategy. As well as being a supporter and partner in these big infrastructure projects, we’ll continue to champion the need for us all to work together to unlock the biggest benefits for customers by focusing on ambitious reforms to the energy market and accelerate electrification.
“Only this will ensure the increase in renewable generation benefits the country as a whole and ensure the energy transition is a powerful force for good and for growth.”
