New business planned to simplify grid connections and support the net-zero energy transition
- E.ON plans a new Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) business to provide an end-to-end service, supporting the UK’s transition to sustainable energy
- It aims to support development of a smart, flexible energy grid for all – from housing developers, to EV charging hubs, manufacturers and industrial energy storage businesses
To simplify the transition to new energy, E.ON UK plans for a new IDNO business to support the transition to a smart, flexible UK energy grid. The new end-to-end service will help a wide range of customers – from housing developers to charge-point operators, manufacturing businesses and educational institutions.
E.ON achieved its Independent Connections Provider (ICP) accreditation to support both high and low voltage connections in 2024. Now a Distribution Licence application is under consideration with the energy regulator Ofgem, to enable E.ON to launch its new IDNO business.
By offering tailored and sustainable solutions, E.ON UK’s ambition is to build on its work to support the country’s move to a smart and flexible energy grid, aligning with the Clean Power 2030 action plan.
Luke Ellis, Director of E.ON UK Networks, said: “Decentralised energy systems are transforming the way we generate, distribute, and consume sustainable energy in the UK. However, businesses and organisations still need to overcome huge challenges when it comes to connecting sustainable energy solutions – ranging from solar to industrial heat pumps and batteries – to the grid.
“Our in-depth understanding of energy usage, the environment and potential impact on any community means we’re well placed and can provide a package that's the right fit for a range of customers with a smart and flexible connection need. We’ve invested in new and innovative technology within substations, which manages flexible energy, so we can ensure resilience of supply for residents, businesses and organisations – meaning they can focus on their own sustainability and service goals.”
As part of the strategic business move, E.ON UK will create more than 10 new job roles, including apprenticeships. to add to its existing capabilities.
