How a soothing approach is needed to inspire climate action in younger generations
E.ON Next tackles eco-anxiety in kids with groundbreaking series ‘The Secret Lives of 5 Year Olds’ – after research shows 60% of youth are worried about the climate crisis, but need empathy to help them put actionable change in place.
Scaring children into changing the world is not going to work, research from E.ON Next shows.
As climate change increasingly threatens the future, a troubling phenomenon has emerged: eco-anxiety among young people.
Recent findings from Bath University indicate that nearly 60% of youth globally feel deeply worried or extremely concerned about their future.
The issue has become particularly pronounced among children, who experience eco-anxiety at a disproportionately higher rate than adults, according to research from Imperial College London.
In response, E.ON Next has taken a groundbreaking approach to address this through their new YouTube series, ‘The Secret Lives of 5 Year Olds: The Next Generation’ , available via Channel 4.
The series will explore the awareness of climate concerns and eco-anxiety within the next generation and how to explore these themes to drive real societal change in the future. The series will help empower children to build energy saving habits and recognise the power they have in doing so.
Recent data shows two-in-five children reported an emotional response to climate change within the past week – a figure that climbs to three in five over just 14 days.
And 37% of young people experienced eco-anxiety last week, with the number skyrocketing to 59% in a fortnight.
These statistics highlight an urgent need for not just awareness, but also effective strategies to mitigate these fears.
Narrated by BAFTA-winning actor Toby Jones, the series aims to create a safe space for children to articulate their understanding of climate change and how they can save energy, with the kids learning through various tasks linked to key child development themes including empathy and responsibility.
By prioritising empathy and understanding, E.ON Next hopes to shift the narrative from one of panic to one of empowerment.
E.ON Next is taking significant strides beyond mere awareness-raising. The company is committed to promoting educational initiatives that inform young people about the climate crisis while providing practical steps they can take to make a difference.
These safe spaces allow young people to express their feelings while learning coping strategies to manage their anxiety.
E.ON Next’s recent report highlights the importance of transforming fear into action, stating in one of its conclusions: "By tackling eco-anxiety head-on, we can enable young people to feel more in control of their futures."
In addition to addressing mental health, E.ON Next is dedicated to investing in green technologies and sustainable practices that resonate with younger generations.
The company has pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, a commitment that not only aims to reduce its own environmental impact but also serves as a beacon for communities striving for sustainable living.
By promoting renewable energy sources and energy efficiency, E.ON Next showcases that meaningful environmental change is both necessary and achievable.
‘The Secret Lives of 5 Year Olds: The Next Generation’ not only aims to illuminate the emotional challenges faced by young people but also looks at climate awareness.
E.ON Next’s holistic approach intertwines education, emotional support, and sustainable practices, allowing the younger generation to thrive despite their fears.
By transforming eco-anxiety into actionable insights, E.ON Next aspires to nurture a future filled with empowered individuals ready to confront climate challenges.
Produced by Banijay UK’s DSP, and available now on Channel 4’s YouTube channel, ‘The Secret Lives of 5 Year Olds: The Next Generation’ invites audiences to engage in essential conversations about the intersection of climate change and mental health.
