E.ON Next’s top tips for saving energy this winter
E.ON next shares 3 top tips and 7 lucky lifestyle changes for saving energy this winter.
As the nights draw in and the temperatures drop, E.ON Next is sharing its top – and SIMPLEST – energy-saving tips to help customers save power, cut costs, and protect the planet.
By implementing basic changes, households can potentially make a significant difference in their energy consumption and costs.
Top tips for saving energy this winter
1. Embrace smart technology
Smart meters are a game changer when it comes to monitoring energy use. E.ON Next encourages all customers to take advantage of this technology, which provides real-time information about gas and electricity consumption.
“The UK Government aims for all households to be offered a smart meter by 2025, and for good reason,” says Julian Lennertz, Chief Commercial Officer at E.ON Next. “By tracking usage, customers can make informed decisions that not only reduce their bills but also benefit the environment.”
2. Optimise heating efficiency
As temperatures drop, ensuring your heating system is efficient is crucial. Start with bleeding your radiators – if they’re warm at the bottom but cold at the top, trapped air may be the culprit. A radiator key can easily solve this issue. Additionally, keep furniture away from radiators to allow heat to circulate freely, and consider using draught excluders to block cold air from seeping in through gaps around doors and windows.
3. Insulate hot water systems
Improving insulation around your hot water cylinder can save you around £35 annually. E.ON Next suggests investing in a British Standard jacket to keep the water warm without wasting energy. Upgrading to an energy-efficient showerhead can also halve water usage, further cutting heating costs.
PLUS: Your lucky 7 simple lifestyle changes
1. Lower your thermostat
Turning down your thermostat by just one degree could save you about £65 a year. E.ON Next recommends keeping your heating set at a comfortable level and not cranking it up when you come home to a cold house.
2. Let the sunshine in
Take advantage of natural heat by opening curtains during the day to let sunlight warm your home. Closing them at night helps retain that warmth, reducing reliance on heating systems.
3. Switch to energy-efficient lighting
Opt for LED bulbs and make use of smart lighting solutions. Not only do they consume less energy, but they also have a longer lifespan. Using lamps for specific tasks rather than bright overhead lights can further reduce electricity use.
4. Rethink your cooking methods
When preparing meals, consider using a microwave or toaster oven instead of a conventional oven whenever possible, as these options typically consume less energy. Remember to keep the oven door closed while cooking to maintain heat and reduce cooking time.
5. Maximise loads in appliances
Always run your dishwasher and washing machine with full loads to ensure you're getting the most out of your energy usage. Reducing the temperature for laundry can save about £28 annually.
6. Keep appliances maintained
Regularly clean the coils on your fridge and avoid overfilling it to ensure it operates efficiently. Consider unplugging chargers and appliances when not in use, which can save approximately £80 a year on energy bills.
7. Practical home improvements – invest in renewable energy
E.ON Next customers can receive up to £350 off heat pumps and £200 off new solar panels and battery systems. These investments not only lead to significant savings but also support the transition to a more sustainable energy system.
Support When You Need It
E.ON Next understands that the current economic climate can be challenging. Their Energy Specialists are available to assist customers who may be struggling with rising costs, offering tailored advice and support through WhatsApp.
Julian Lennertz concluded: “Every small change can lead to significant savings. By working together, we can navigate these tough times while making choices that benefit both our wallets and the planet.”
