E.ON Next reminds customers with RTS meters to get in touch to upgrade
- E.ON Next is reminding its customers with Radio Teleswitch (RTS) meters to upgrade to a smart meter
- The technology that supports the RTS meter service is being switched off from 30 June 2025, as the equipment reaches the end of its operational life
- Those who do not upgrade risk their heating and/or hot water provisions being affected
E.ON Next is encouraging customers who have an RTS meter to upgrade to a smart meter before the radio signal that powers the technology is turned off on 30 June.
The RTS service, introduced in the 1980s, uses a radio signal to help control and manage specific electricity meters when switching between peak and off-peak rates and it supports both heating and hot water systems.
The service is reaching the end of its operational life, with the equipment that produces the radio signal unable to be adequately maintained. The RTS service is due to close on 30 June.
Customers may have an RTS meter if:
- There is a ‘radio teleswitch’ label on the meter itself or on a separate switch box near your meter.
- Your property is heated using electricity or storage heaters.
- There is no gas supply to your area, or your area has recently had a gas supply provided. This includes households in rural areas and high-rise flats.
- You get cheaper energy at different times of day. Your tariff might be: Economy 7, Economy 10 or Total Heat Total Control.
Those who do not update their RTS meter may find their heating or hot water provisions are affected.
Customers who upgrade will remain on the same tariff or be switched to a tariff that better suits their circumstances. The new meter will be fitted at no extra cost.
Millions of E.ON Next customers have already made the switch to smart meters to help them budget, save and manage their energy more efficiently.
Ramona Vlasiu, Chief Operating Officer at E.ON Next, said: “It is vitally important for customers with RTS meters to respond to us to ensure their meter is upgraded before the radio signal is switched off from 30 June.
“We have engineers available to upgrade your meter to ensure your supply is not affected.”
E.ON Next is contacting customers who are impacted to arrange an upgrade, or customers can book their upgrade online. Impacted customers will be prioritised for engineer visits.
